The Red-Legged Honeycreeper can be found in Central and South America, particularly southern Mexico as far south as Brazil, Bolivia and Peru, as well as Tobago, Trinidad and Cuba, where it may have been introduced. It is a small songbird and belongs to the tanager family; its scientific name is Cyanerpes Cyaneus.

The Red-Legged Honeycreeper typically weighs around 14 grams and measures about 12 cm, with a bill that is slightly decurved. The male of the species is blue-violet, with a turquoise crown, bright red legs and black tail, back and wings. The underwing is a lemon yellow color, although this is normally only visible during flight. The male moults and develops an eclipse plumage once the mating season is over, with a predominant green color and black wings.

The female of the species and younger birds are mostly green in color, with pale underparts that have faint streak marks. Young birds have brown legs, and female birds have reddish-brown legs.
